On the New Cabinet
I'll make this simple:
I don't mind that my local MP did not get a cabinet post, although he was considered a likely candidate. I don't make my electoral decisions based on how much pork and prestige my representative can bring.
If David Emerson wants to join the Conservative caucus, he should run as a Conservative.
If Michael Portier wants a Senate seat, he should run for one, now that you actually can run for Senate.
I don't have any particular swing one way or another as to whether these two individuals would actually make good cabinet ministers. I just disapprove of the way they got there.
Although it's not clear why it was all necessary to go to such pains when there's plenty of other caucus members that would make decent cabinet ministers.
Overall, an obviously calculated but miscalculated step by Prime Minister Harper to move toward getting a foothold in Vancouver and Montreal.
