Paving the Road to the Next Cash Crunch
The BC government has announced that tuition increases must be limited to “inflation.” Evidently,
The government expects that the best and brightest minds will flock to teach and research at a place with no real chance for real financial improvement.
Assuming that they'll use CPI, the government believes that the future returns to education can be traced somehow to the present price of broccoli.
Tuition increases above “inflation” are sufficiently evil to require state intervention.
I'm thinking back to a conversation I had with Dr. Newman about his decision to teach at UBC. If I recall correctly, his reasons were mostly of the “great place to live” variety and money didn't have much to do with it. He also pointed out that many of the new profs (in econ, at least) are UBC alumni coming back to give back to the alma mater. I'm not denying the significance of these factors, but the truth is that BC universities are already being outbid by others for bright minds, and artificially binding the hands of the institutions will not help in the sincere pursuit of a quality educational system, which should be made to last a lot longer than my short stay here in UBC.
Of course, there's the option of dumping even more taxpayer cash to the universities, since some think the “right to an education” comes with no strings attached and extends to people in their mid-twenties.
